Phelps County Courthouse

In the Phelps County courthouse you can find both the county court (Box 255) and the district court (Box 462). Each of them is in their respective Tenth Nebraska judicial district. The places you can go in Phelps county on US 6, US 34, US 183 and SR 23 and they all meet in Holdrege.

Phelps county was founded in the Spring of 1873. Prior to that time the county was a dangerous place; a wagon train was attacked in Northwest Phelps county in what was called the Plum Creek massacre and was the beginning of the Indian War around 1864. Many immigrants from Sweden came to settle in Holdrege in the 1880's and construction of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad company ran through this town bringing the first train around 1883. The Nebraska Prairie museum, in this town, has exhibits of collections of period clothing, antique toys, farm equipment, tools, household items and items from W.W.II German POW's. You can find a night of entertainment at the Tassel Performing Arts center which showcases theatrical performances, dance performances and concerts of individual performers and groups from the United States and abroad.
