Back in 1916 Pancho Villa led 500 men in attack on the town. President Woodrow Wilson sent 10,000 troops under General John J. Pershing to pursue Villa. Villa escaped. In 2011 a gun smuggling scandal involved the Mayor, a village trustee, a former police chief and others. Pancho Villa State Park is a great place for camping. Columbus Hstorical Museum and Depot and Ben Archer Health Center are some of the sites in this village. Yes, you guessed it - it was named for Christopher Columbus
