This town is so named because of its location at the base of Wagon Mound, a mound which looks like a conestoga wagon; although for a time it was called Santa Clara. The little community of 1 square mile, its population is just over 300, is located on IS 25 on the old Santa Fe Trail. The village is characterized by brightly painted houses. It is in horse and cattle country with large ranches in the area. Late in August, Wagon Mound celebrates its annual Bean Day. This event is marked by its barbeque, music, rodeo, Mud Bog races, softball tournament, car show, dances and Bean Cleaning Party dinner.
