One of the town colleges, Alfred University, is one of the oldest co-ed schools in the country, founded in 1836. Alfred Village has a lot of very good architecture, both in the colleges and downtown. |

About the area |
The Town of Alfred is in a beautiful, hilly area of Allegany County named after Alfred the Great, an English king. The Village of Alfred has some interesting geography: the main village is on the lowest level, with Alfred University above and to the east, and Alfred State College on a hill to the west. |
