Last town formed, in 1867, from Chemung, Elmira & Southport. Named for the home of Henry Clay. Major tobacco growing & shipping until 1858. Two of the largest island in the Chemung River are Baldwin Island & Big Island - except during flood season. The Chemung River flows through the town of Ashland, the village of Wellsburg & the hamlet of Lowman - as well as NYS routes 14, 17, 367 & 427. Drive responsibly. |
