Watch out because this is where you can get serious prison time. If you were ever thinking of hiring a lawyer, now is the time. Chief Clerk may be in the Hazlett Building at 201 Lake St. |

About the area |
Formerly a major thoroughfare of rivers & creeks from Niagara & the Great Lakes to Chesapeake Bay, Chemung County boasts Elmira as the "Soaring Capitol of America". Since 1930, Harris Hill has hosted National Soaring (sailplane) competitions. An earlier claim to fame is Mark Twain, who spent summers here at his wife's family home, Quarry Farm. Twain wrote large portions of his books in the octangle study built on the farm, now relocated to the Elmira College campus. Organized in 1836, the county seat settled in Elmira, the Chemung County Courthouse Complex was built in 1836, & again in 1861. Chemung County has one city, 11 towns & 5 villages. Oh, and Elmira College might be here as well. |
