About the area
The Brooklyn district of Red Hook was a village prior to its annexation to the borough. The Dutch settlers named it Roode Hoek (Hoek means point or corner) for the red clay soil and the point of land that juts into the East River; being a peninsula. Interestingly, Red Hook is the only part of NYC that has a full frontal view of the Statue of Liberty from land.
