About the area |
Established in 1839, Nunda is from the Seneca language, meaning where the valley meets the hills. Nunda Village included 4 Seneca camps until 1818, 2 on either side of the Chautauqua Hollow Trail. The village square (formerly a frog pond) is located where the Chautauqua Hollow Trail (State St) crosses the Keshequa Trail (East St). Of the three locks of the Genesee Valley Canal formerly located within the village, only the ruins of Lock 42 remain. |
