About the area |
The Revolutionary War British spy, Major Andre passed through Haverstraw twice; once on his way to meet with Benedict Arnold, and the second time as he travelled to his trial and execution in Tappan. From 1771 to 1941, Haverstraw was reknown for its brickmaking due to the abundance of clay that was formed along the banks of the Hudson River and was often called "Bricktown". Many of the brick structures and brownstone buildings in NYC were constructed from Haverstraw bricks. |
