About the area |
Originally hunting grounds for the Seneca Indians, first settled as Wormly (for Samuel Wormly, town's first Postmaster, Tavern & Innkeeper) in 1810; changed to Caton in 1840. Best known as a quiet, conservative, friendly residential area, located on the Pennsylvania border. During the Civil War, Caton sent more soldiers (175) than any other small town in NYS; in 1898, Caton had 12 schools & 12 teachers; the buildings are now mostly private homes. More recently, the Caton Town Planning Board held a Potluck Dessert Kick Off Meeting (if you feed them, they will come) handing out cameras & film so residents could record favorite places, as a guide to the Planning Committee. |
