Court Clerk Tracie Wilson can be found on the first floor of the town building. And someone really doesn't like our banner advertising. |

About the area |
Located along Rte 15, the Town of Erwin includes the village of Painted Post, & the hamlets of Coopers Plaines, Gang Mills & Erwin. Around 1793, Col. Arthur Erwin led a cattle drive heading for Fort Niagra. Saw the land designated as "Town Two, Range Two" & immediately offered the owners $1500 (with the cattle as part payment) for what would eventually become the town of Erwin. A crossing of well-traveled Indian trails, rendezvous & resting area, homes were built, fields cultivated & festivities and dancing held around a painted post located where the Cohocton & Tioga rivers converge to form the Chemung River. The Post was later removed to Capt Samuel Erwin's tavern, where it was eventually destroyed by souvenir hunters. Coopers Plaines is the home of Cooper Rockets, 1st made in the 1850's. |
