The website says 16 Court St, Google says 20 Court St. The court clerk is across the street at #21. Court Street is a one way - enter from Rte 17C/Front Street. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the 1879 County Courthouse is the oldest functioning courthouse in NYS. The pair of lions at the south entrance originated from NYC. The 1st fire alarm bell in service from around the Civil War to World War One, when it developed a crack, has retired to the courthouse lawn. |

About the area |
Consisting of 9 towns & 6 villages, Tioga was one of the earliest counties in New York, the origin of 5 later counties. One of the first Europeans in the area was a member of Samuel Champlain's exploration party, Etienne Brule. It's the birthplace of Esther McQuigg Morris, the first woman to hold public office in the US, & John D. Rockefeller, who created the Standard Oil Company. |
