Interstate Hway 84 and the Columbia river form the Northern border of The Dalles. United States Hway 30 runs through the Northern part of the town.

About the area

At the end of the Oregon Trail it was The Dalles where early pioneers in the area loaded their wagons onto rafts or barges and floated them down the Columbia river. In the middle of the 19th century Fort Dalles was built to provide protection for the immigrants in the area. The Surgeon's quarters still remain and is part of the museum on the site. The museum's exhibits display military artifacts, household goods and old medical equipment. The Dalles Dam hydroelectric facility produces enough electricity for the Dalles and has the capacity to produce enough electricity for a much larger city.
