Newport is another puzzle piece in the Harrisburg-Carlisle Area with an elevation of more than 390 feet above sea level and named after the opening of the Pennsylvania Canal back in the late 1820's. The incorporation of this territory to Perry's County map took place back in the 1840's when there was a high German population within the area of Newport and the nearest cities of Millerstown, Bloomfield, and Thompsontown.
