Many people believe this lovely territory was named for Mathew Caldwell, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence; but this is just one theory out of many. The map of this county is constituted by six cities and four unincorporated areas which include Dale, Fentress, Joliet, Lytton Springs, Prairie Lea, St. John Colony, and Maxwell; all of them served by the school districts of Lockhart ISD, Luling ISD, and Prairie Lea ISD which provide a top class education to all the sons and daughters of Caldwell.
