Part of the Abilene metro area, this territory was named after James Hughes Callahan; who served his country as a soldier during the Texas Revolution. The Interstate 20, U.S. Highway 283, State Highway 36, and State Highway 206 are the most important highways within the 900 square miles of extension of Callahan. In this community, the racial makeup has not been as extensive as it is in the rest of Texas because close to 95% of its population is White Non Hispanic and just very small colonies of African American, Latino, Asian, Native American, and other racial groups are residing in Callahan.
