Colonial Heights Magistrate

Colonial Heights Magistrate is a magistrate court in the Twelfth Judicial district of Virginia.

Colonial Heights was originally a part of Chesterfield County, when it became a town around 1926 and was incorporated as city in the late 1940's; approximately 10 years later receiving charter as a fully independent city. If you came here at the beginning of the 17th century you would see members of the Algonquin Indian tribe moving about along the Appomattox River. Around 1620, British settlers came to the area. One of them registered the first land patent in the area for over 600 acres, which he later developed into a plantation in this area first called Conjurer's Field. The Brick House, thought to be the oldest permanent structure in Colonial Heights was completed around 1685 and if you want to visit this historic structure; tours can be arranged to see both the interior and exterior. Violet Bank Farm on the shores of the Appomattox river was the headquarters of General Robert E. Lee. The home is now the Violet Bank museum and is an excellent example of Federal design and American interior decorative arts and is on the National Register of Historic Places The exhibits display Civil War era artifacts such as guns, furniture, glass, ceramics, textiles, accoutrements, books and swords.
