Stanardsville Magistrate

Stanardsville Magistrate is the magistrate court of Greene county in the Sixteenth judicial district of Virginia.

It is apparent from some of the artifacts found in this county that people lived in this area many thousands of years ago. More recently in the history of the area, Native American Indians of the Monacan nation lived in villages, farmed and hunted in the area. The Old Jail next to the Courthouse in Stanardsville houses the Greene County Historical Society museum. This group continually rotates exhibits representative of 8,000 years of history and pre-history in the county. The museum also has an amazing 110,000 name database of Greene County descendants which people can access on a public computer. There is building here, the Lafayette Inn, which has been here since around 1840. Designed in Federalist style with fifteen-inch-thick walls of local red brick it has been a stage coach stop, a hotel, restaurant, saloon, boarding house, a hospital during the Civil War and more recently housed the first Stanardsville telephone exchange and the local newspaper. It's still in business as an inn and restaurant.
