About the area
Formed from the territories of the Halifax County back in the 1700's, it's another member of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Chatham city is the county seat of Pittsylvania. Smith Mountain is the best location to enjoy a panoramic view of part of the almost 980 square miles of this county. Gretna Town and the Town of Hurt are two very small communities of less than 1300 residents of this county.
