Summersville Municipal Court

In the summer of 1820, an act of the legislature established the city of Summersville. The county seat was then moved here, actually in the center of what is now the Quilt Shoppe in Summersville, from Hutchinson’s on Muddelty. The location of the county seat was not the only point of contention; a Virginia legislator claimed the county seat should be named for him. However the honor had already been promised to a judge who had lobbied hard for the formation of Nicholas County and had also introduced the bill into the Virginia Assembly to form the new county. Even the boundaries of the town were controversial having been laid out to exclude certain citizens who were opposed to the incorporation. The Ivy & Stone Council for the Arts promotes the cultural arts in Nicholas County with diverse programming from Bach to Bluegrass, pop, jazz, gospel and creative dance. It produces its Performing Artist Series with all performances presented at the Nicholas County High School Auditorium in Summersville. Its Summer Serenade Series presents free summertime concerts under the trees on the Brown House lawn in Summersville. Bring your supper and your chairs to enjoy some wonderful evenings of music.
