About the area

Franklin was first settled by two brothers who arrived in the area around 1769, although they built homes on opposite sides of the South Branch river. Around 1788 the first meeting of the county court took place and they selected Frankford, which was what Franklin was first named as the permanent county seat. One of the brothers who first settled the area then laid out a town and placed the lots for sell. By the 1790's the town's population had increased and it was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly as Franklin.
