The town originally known as Putnam-on-Kanawha, had 1920 stock show exhibits and a Labor day celebration attended by several thousand people who enjoyed the amusements including aeroplane flights, baseball games, public speaking and dancing. However, in the 20's and early 30's, there were few houses on this property which were part of the tract of land forming this new town and the federal government purchased it. The government then changed the name of the town which had become Red House Farms to Eleanor and created a Subsistence Homestead for which 150 families were selected and offered a challenge and chance for a new life.
