With a name like Phil Campbell the city had to be named after someone. The provider of the name was a railroad man who agreed to run the railroad through this community, if the town would name it after him. All three merchants in town agreed, establishing the town of Phil Campbell in the early 1900's. It sure has grown since then. It now has a junior college, three traffic lights, two policemen, and a Piggly Wiggly. The Dismals Canyon is an approximately 85 acre Natural Conservatory which is privately owned and operated. Visitors can hike the canyon floor or swim in the cool waters of the canyon. There is a campus of Northwest-Shoals Community College, a two year institution of higher learning, in Phil Campbell.
