About the area

The city is located at the junction of the Choctawhatchee River and Pea River. Much of the town is under sea level and needs the levee built around the town to prevent flooding from the two rivers like the floods which occurred in the 1820's and late 1920's. Choctawhatchee river was the scene of robust river steamer traffic to Pensacola and other ports until well after the coming of the railroads in the 1890's.
