About the area

The city is an oldie, first appearing on maps as far back as the 1730's but it was not incorporated until the 1850's. It gets its name from the Creek Indian word for Great Swamp. However; there is no indication of its ever having been a swamp. In the years following the Civil War; Opelika was under military rule. Auburn University, a national power in football, is located near Opelika. Its College of Engineering is ranked in the nation's top twenty engineering programs. Its MBA Program in the College of Business has been ranked among the top programs in the country. The Auburn-Opelika Robert G. Woods airport is located between the two cities.
