| About the area |
The family for whom the town is named came to the area around 1857. A railroad which did not at the time reach McGehee, was constructed from Pine Bluff southeast through Varner, to Chicot around 1870. THe son of the family purchased a tract of land which was to become McGehee around 1876 and when the railroad was extended to the town around 1878, people started to come to the area. Lumber was dominant in the economy and a saw mill was built to accommodate this industry and produce lumber products used to build many of the homes in town. The town's economy has remained largely agricultural with trucks now hauling the products in place of trains.
