Apparently a lone red Oak tree sitting between two prairies at the site of the city was the reason that one of the original civil engineers surveying the area for the Memphis & Little Rock railroad gave it the name Loan Oak. Again the railroad influenced the name of the town when the engineers recommended that the spelling be changed to "Loneoak" and later the "e" was dropped. The construction of the first depot was completed around 1867 and the same time the town was surveyed and plotted.
