About the area

Moore Haven would have been held high in the suffragettes esteem. The city’s charter included a provision giving women not only the right to vote but to hold office. The citizens first mayor was Marian Newhall Horwitz the first woman mayor in Florida, the first in the South, and among the first in the nation. At one time Moore Haven was called "Little Chicago" because it was a significant boom town.
