About the area

There are about 3 million specimens in the collections of the Fort Hays State University Sternberg Museum of Natural History located in Hays. The collections represent the sciences of paleontology, paleobotany, geology, botany, entomology, ichthyology, herpetology, ornithology, and mammalogy as they apply to the natural history of the Great Plains. Although the bulk of the collections are from the Great Plains and adjacent areas, reference collections from other regions are maintained as well.
