About the area

The city of Calais is located right on the Canadian border and along the St. Croix River. Although it has a population under 4000 it is the largest city in Washington County. Calais was first discovered at the beginning of the 17th century by two French explorers. THe city owns tw wo wonderful wild life sites. The East Coast Greenway follows the former Maine Central Rail Road right of way along the St. Croix River where there is plenty of wildlife and the natural beauty is a sight to behold. Devil's Head is comprised of a little over 300 acres of land with a high granite headland towering almost 350 feet over the estuary; a low tide sand and boulder beach; an upland forest and abundant wildlife.
