| About the area |
The City of LaGrange was founded early in the 1830's. However a trading post existed here as early as the 1790's and French explorers came by the area in canoes on the Mississippi around 1678. The founders made their choice because of the riverfront, deep water close to shore and the fertile farmlands adjacent to the river. LaGrange became a steamboat landing where steamers could lie for several days at the wharf, discharging and receiving goods. Soon there were long wagon trains delivering produce and stocking up with goods from the wholesale houses. The three main parks in town where most residents go are Washington park, Mineral Well park with its view of the river and mineral well and LaGrange Riverfront park, beach and boatdock where the annual boat races are held.
