Williamsville was established around 1871 and by 1890 it had a general store which could supply merchandise to all the farmers in the area. The Markham Springs Recreation area lies just to the West of town. The area has a modern campground with campsites equipped with electric hook-ups; primitive camping loops near the Black river; a day use area with a 2-acre, 20 foot deep mill pond; several picnic sites; open fields; river access for boating, fishing and float tubes and canoes and short hiking trails.
