| About the area |
The City of Jackson was founded at the beginning of the 1820's. Shortly thereafter the Mississippi State Legislature authorized the location to be the permanent seat of government for the state. The town was burned three times by Union troops during the Civil War. The city was rebuilt and at the end of the 19th century the population stood at less than 8000. However after the turn of the century the population grew rapidly and recently was over 175,000. |
