Although only US 51 passes through Brookhaven; IS 55 lies just to the West of town and SR 184, SR 583 and US 84 are just to the South.

About the area

At the junction of a blazed wagon trail and the East prong of the Bogue Chitto River the Old Brook trading post was established about a mile and a half southeast of present day Brookhaven. The town has a relationship to the Northeast; it was named around 1820 to honor the former home, on Long Island, New York, of its pioneer owner and founder. Soon a water mill and a small tannery were established. In the 1850's the founder of the Old Brook settlement did not allow the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad Company to establish a right of way through his property causing the railroad to choose a route to the Northwest. A depot was built at the new site and the Brookhaven name was appropriated for the area surrounding the depot.
