As it had done for many towns in this area, the Illinois Central Railroad line and its opening of the Madison station in the 1850's gave rise to the town and its growth and import of thriving businesses from nearby area. The Madison Land Company encouraged people to move from the North by offering land at low prices causing further growth of the town. Madison is a "Certified Retirement City" and considered to be one of the best retirement locations in the country in addition to being chosen as one of the "Top Ten Cities to Raise a Family," by Family Circle Magazine. The Madison Square Center for the Arts, listed as a historic site on the National Registry of Historic Buildings, has 16 classrooms, a gymnatorium with a proscenium stage, kitchen facilities, and art and music studio space. With these facilities it is able to provide cultural arts education and programming
