About the area

Virginia City, the county seat of Madison county, was at one time the capital of Montana Territory. It benefited from the mining boom of the 1860's and the 1870's when 10,000 lived here. Now Virginia City and it's neighboring town Nevada City are one of the busiest tourist attractions in Montana and are major seasonal employers and there are now only 150 year round residents who this preserved gold mining town. You can walk on the same boardwalks that once were patrolled by vigilantes and visit over 100 historic buildings which are filled with artifacts and authentic furnishings of the 1860's.
