| About the area |
The area now known as the Town of Silver City over its hundreds of years of existence has seen Native American, Hispanic and Anglo settlers. When silver was discovered in the area in the 1870's, the town was laid out and saw the arrival of many settlers. The town enjoyed a financial boom from the mining and shipment of the silver ore. This city has a visitor center, the Gila Regional Medical Center and the Western New Mexico university among its attractions. Residents enjoy the New Mexico Symphony, a Blues Festival and the bicycle races. The annual Silver City free Blues festival takes place on Memorial Day weekend in Gough park. Attendees are entertained by the music of rising blues stars and world reknowned musicians at this event which has become a community celebration and all-around block party.
