Portales is famous for its Valencia peanuts which as well as peanuts from the surrounding area are handled in several processing plants for the peanuts in this city. To celebrate this important crop Potales has been holding a Peanut Valley festival in October for about 40 years. This event has, besides live music and dance performances, arts and crafts, food and games. Best of all you can get your fill of the product making this possible. The Black Water Draw museum has on display artifacts discovered at the Blackwater Locality No. 1 Site near Potales. This important spot in North American archaeology is where evidence of a human occupation was discovered alongside items related to Late Pleistocene fauna, including Columbian mammoth, camel, horse, bison, sabertooth cat and dire wolf. The city's parks have baseball fields, a swimming pool, tennis courts, golf and a jogging trail. |
