About the area
This community of historic note has a population of over 8,000 people residing on 1.6 square miles of land. In the minds of many, the name of Gettysburg is probably best known as the location of one of the key battles of the U.S. Civil War – a battle which saw the loss of 51,000 lives. Today the residents of Gettysburg are witness to a very different type of struggle as 19% of the residents live below the poverty line. One thing that may help to improve the future is that this town is home of several colleges: the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg College, and a campus of the Harrisburg Area Community College.
