Mister Clay had the admiration of the former residents, and received the honor of getting this land named after his surname. Incorporated back in the 1830s, this community, neighbor of West Alexander, Green Hills, and West Middletown, witnessed the arrival of German, Irish, English and Scotch-Irish colonies in the search of a better future back in the early 19th century.
