The John Wesley Powell River History museum, in Green River has on display throughout the museum exhibits about the life of the man for whom the museum is named. These exhibits detail his impact on the history of the Colorado Plateau from his days as a soldier in the Union Army, to his role in the founding of the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Ethnology. Exhibits are displayed in the Boat room, the Dinosaur area and the Crossroads of the West. In addition there is the wonderful art gallery. The annual Melon Days celebration in September gets its start with the Green River Melon Days Scholarship pageant at the end of August. This festival celebrates the city's as a preeminent position in the state as grower of the melons. Featured are the Scout Pancake breakfast, melon run, softball tournament, parade with its giant slice of watermelon and plenty of real slices of the melon to eat.
