About the area |
In the fall of 1849, three Mormon pioneer families settled just to the South of present day Tooele City. Just a few short months later some men obtained timber rights from Small Canyon (today’s Middle Canyon) and Big Canyon (Settlement Canyon) and formed Tooele City Corporation four years later. A few short year later when the Tooele valley was for the U.S. Army a small group of 100 Goshute Indians lived in the area. Although the town started out as an agricultural area; during the early 20th century, with the the construction of railroads and the opening of the International Smelting and Refining Company, East of Tooele, the city became industrialized. The city has a number of museums dedicated to its history. The Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum has displays related to the town's history, pioneer pictures and pioneer artifacts. The Tooele Pioneer museum has on display early Tooele county's written histories, pictures, portraits and artifacts. the Tooele Valley Railroad and Mining museum exhibits artifacts from railroading, smelting and mining history in the Tooele valley. On display are a full size locomotive, two wood sided cabooses, two passenger coaches and one snowplow.
