Alternate US 340 runs through Harpers Ferry

This town lies where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet. It was visited by George Washington on his very first surveying expedition at the tender age of 17. This town was also the the starting place of the Lewis and Clarke expedition and the location of the first structural steel bridge in the world was built to allow the railroad to cross the Potomac for the first time. Much of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park surrounds this town. There are several museums in Harpers Ferry, all of them worth visiting. The story of John Brown is told through the exhibits in the wax museum dedicated to the abolutionist. Living Civil War History museum displays among other things, the oldest confederate soldiers shoes, a copy of the original truce that ended the war, authentic medical instruments used during the war, cannonballs and other artillery and uniforms. Dodona is the only home that General George C. Marshall ever owned, and the furnishings are the general's belongings exactly as they looked during World War II.
