| About the area |
Monongah has its claim to fame or possibly infamy. It was the site of a terrific mine disaster when in the morning hours of an early December 1907 day explosions occurred at the No. 6 and No. 8 mines here. When it was over about 362 had lost their lives. The explosions were strong enough to shatter buildings and pavement, hurl people and horses violently to the ground and knock streetcars off their rails. It was quite possibly the worst mine disaster in the history of the United States. Today its population stands at a bit over 1000 and has grown since the year 2000.
