The culture of the city is a reflection of the heritage left by the Slovak, Polish, Hungarian, and Italian immigrants who came to area from the 1880's to the 1920's. For all that is water; Cheat river and Cheat Lake, accessible from IS 68, is the place to be. The Cheat river, with its Class III, IV and V, rapids provides many thrills for white water rafters. The Cabela’s King Kat Fishing tournament and Kid’s Fishing Rodeo in June and the West Virginia Bass tournament in July are a chance for anglers to show their skills. Cheat Lake has two lake marinas, Edgewater and Sunset, from which jet skiers or powerboaters can launch their craft. Water skiers and tube riders also find the lake a great place to do their thing.
