| About the area |
Rhodell was plotted and laid out around 1907 but not incorporated until 30 years later. For some reason Rhodell is the only incorporated town on Stonecoal Creek. The town was originally called Rhodesdale and the Frances mine, which was part of the Winding Gulf Coal field, at Rhodell was owned by the E.C. Minter Coal Company and operated by the Rhodell Coal Company as well. This coal mine was still in operation in the 1950's. The mine operated at its peak in the mid 1900's but has since been abandoned. The coal was moved to market via the Stone Coal Sub-Division, a branch line railroad jointly operated by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad and the Virginian Railroad.
