The the North Main Historic District of Monticello is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. THis district consists of homes, churches and other structures of the early days of the city. The Drew County Historical museum is housed in the former Cavaness Home and has two 1800's log cabins on the grounds. During the construction of this home, the owner heard of a train derailment between Collins and Dermott. Using cement from the cars which had been derailed; bricks for the home and the columns were molded and used in the house construction. The original Sears brick making machine, used in this process, is still on the museum grounds. The displays in the museum consist of artifacts representative of the history of the county and antiques.
