About the area |
Around 1869 the Osage Indians gave their encampment in this area its first name, Napawalla after their chief. After the Treaty of 1870 was signed; the departure of the Osage Indians from the area left a large part of their encampment for sale. The first business to open in town, the Oxford Town Company gave the town its new name. Three structures built in the early years of the town are worth seeing for their repesentation of the history of the area. The Old Mill once produced flour and cornmeal and is now on the National Historical Register. The Carriage House was the first brick home built in Oxford. It has been restored and is open to the public on special occasions. The Humphrey house was built by former slaves following the Civil War and has walls which are 16 inches thick
The house was restored in the 1970's.
