Slater was founded around 1878 and has its Hollywood celebrity; it was the boyhood home of Steve McQueen. In fact the city has its annual Steve McQueen Days celebration at the end of April. The festival has car and bike shows, Bushwhacker Winery and Budweiser booths, Pony rides, food vendors, memorabilia from Beech Grove, Indiana and starts off with dinner at Maxine’ s Tea House. All yopu lovers of the blues will want to attend the all day long Bear Creek Blues Fest at the end of June. Bring your lawnchairs, your blankets, hats and plenty of sunscreen. Many nights during the year you will find folks of all ages going to the dances at the Slater Youth center where the each of the dance nights is geared to the age group for the event.
