Waverley Mansion located just minutes from West Point is an excellent example of antebellum elegance which was the South in the years before the Civil war. Completed in the 1850's the plantation of which it was the center was self sustaining. It had gardens, orchards and livestock as well as a brick kiln, cotton gin, ice house and swimming pool. It even produced gas for its chandeliers. As the years went by the plantation added a lumber mill, leather tannery and hat manufacturing operation. Although it was unoccupied for many years, even at the mercy of vandals; its new owners have been restoring the mansion since they purchased it in the 1960's.
